Ramshej fort
This fort near Nashik is on a flat and open ground. This fort
can be seen from all over Nashik. Ramshej is a fort that makes sense of the
saying 'idols are small but fame is great'. The only fort near Ramshej fort is
Trimbakgad. It is eight kos away from there.
The word 'Ramshej' means 'bed of Rama'. While in exile, Lord
Shriram had stayed on this mountain for a few days. Lord Shriram used to rest
at this fort and there is a feeling that he has a bed there. Therefore, this
hill and the fort have been given the name 'Ramshej' since ancient times.
Ramshej fort is at a distance of 15 km from the central bus
stand of Nashik. Ramshej fort stands near Nashik-Peth road. There is a village
called Ashewadi at a distance of half an hour from Peth Road. Ashewadi is a
village at the foot of Ramshej. From CBS bus stand in Nashik to ‘Peth’ bus.
Ashewadi stops at the village fork. After landing there, we reached Ashewadi
village, where we can climb Ramshej fort.
Buses going to Peth take a detour to this fort. Private vehicles
are also available from Peth Naka near Nimani in Nashik. On the way down, you
can see the beautiful fort of Ramshej. It takes 45 minutes to reach the top of
the fort from Ashewadi village.
The fort is 3270 meters above sea level. But as it is not higher
than the actual base, the fort is visible in any season. The surroundings are
clear so you can see the surrounding area.
On the way out of the village, one can see the main fort. The
flagpole is erected here. If you take a detour and go a little further, you
will take steps. These steps are made of modern cement. As you ascend the
steps, you come to the notice of Ramshej fort. The area around the forts at
both ends of the fort is visible.
On the way to the fort, there is a cave. There is a temple of
Rama in this cave. It also shows an inscription carved on one side. A water
tank is visible at the bottom of the cave. In the rainy season it fills up
completely. The water in it is drinkable.
The steps leading to the front of the cave lead directly to the
top of the fort. We reach the area between the two ends of the fort. This part
is too narrow. There is a secret door in front of the door. If you go down this
road, you can see the fort of Deher in front. Long distance traffic on Peth
Road can be seen from here.
The path leading up to the secret gate leads to the other end of
the Ramshej and the path to the left leads directly to the fort's machi, of
course, to the main bastion. Going a little further along the path on the
right, you can see some steps. These steps are designed on a ring. The main
gate of the fort is visible in front. After seeing the door and coming to the
main road, you can see the flagpole erected on the main bastion of the fort.
There is a big celebration on the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji
Maharaj.
This place has a steep slope. Below is the village of Ashewadi.
About four to five km. In the distance, a mountain of Chamar caves can be seen.
Beyond that, a mountain of Pandavaleni can be seen in the distance. If the
atmosphere is clear, the mountains of Anjaneri and Brahmagiri can be seen in
the distance on the right side.
To reach the other end of the fort, one has to turn back from
Machi. The area around this end is higher than before. After climbing a little,
we reach a level. There are two water tanks and a pond. If you walk a little
further from the lake, you will see the temple of a goddess. It is evident from
the footprints that devotees should come and go here constantly. A big festival
is also held here on Navratri.
The descent back to the back of the temple. The second secret
gate of the fort is at this place. Two water tanks are also visible at the
other end. Remains of many dilapidated houses are scattered on this hill. At
the back is a large sloping plateau. If you turn it, you will notice the
perimeter of this end of the fort.
Bhorgad used for surveillance can be seen in front. The complete
view of Nashik-Peth road was from this area. To the right of this point are
some broken idols and the remains of a Ingot.
